It’s official, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have been announced. Yes, the rumours were correct and yes Apple announced two different sizes of their new iPhone, finally listening to customer demand and finally gave the people what they wanted: a larger screen size.
Apple has finally gone past the 4″ screen size that it had previously on the iPhone 5 and 5s. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display, while iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch display, both coming with a new Retina HD screen made with ion-strengthened cover glass and available in gold, silver and space gray colours. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display with a 1334 x 750 pixel resolution, 326ppi. The 6 plus, with a more conventional 1920 x 1080 pixels, 401ppi on its 5.5-inch display. The iPhone 6 will not only be bigger, but will have a sharper display and be better at rendering. With the iPhone 6 plus you will also be able to use it in a all new landscape mode.
Both new phones are powered by a new A8 processor and a all new M8 processor, which is dedicated to motion. There is also a barometer, adding to the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass.
The new A8 processor will allow for 50% greater graphic speed, and 25% faster processing power, and being 50% more energy efficient. However, it is expected that bother iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will offer the same sort of performance.
Obviously a bigger phone would require a bigger battery and Apple has said that the iPhone 6 Plus will give you 80 hours of music playback, compared to the iPhone 6’s 50 hours. The 6 Plus claims 24 hours of 3G talk time, the smaller 14 hours, but the actual capacity has not yet been revealed.
New phones mean new sensors. The iPhone will still have a 8 megapixel iSight camera, but with an upgraded sensor. The camera will have f/22.2 and 1.5 micrometer pixels. it will focus better and offer better low light performance. than previous models. video is 1080p video at 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second and Slo-mo video up to 240 frames per second, double last year’s figure. The new iSight sensor has focus pixels, which really helped a lot for getting fast autofocus on photography, this will help a lot with videos. an added feature is continuous autofocus while recording as well, so your footage will always be in focus. There is also Burst mode on the FaceTime camera for Burst Selfies. This new HD FaceTime sensor does single shot HDR. This allows for great exposure in the foreground and background. It can also do HDR video.
The iPhone 6 offers digital image stabilisation, however, the iPhone 6 Plus goes that little bit further, offering optical image stabilisation, so the bigger device should have the edge when moving.
Both of the devices will run iOS 8, which will bring impressive new updates.
An exciting new feature which has long been in the pipe works at Apple is Apple Pay. It allows clever contactless payments in a number of locations. Secure Element is built into the iPhone 6 and stores all information securely. It is also possible to view and amend all new card information on passbook and yes, you can use the TouchID sensor to authenticate when making a payment. If you lose your phone, or are subject to a breach, you can keep your existing card and because your card isn’t stored on the phone, you don’t have to cancel it if you lose the phone.
“This is the next chapter in Apple’s history,” Cook said.
